Panel IV – Just Transition in Coal Regions

Time: 11:30 – 13:00

Location: The main hall

Moderator: Adnan Rondić

The Ministry of Foreign Trade and Economic Relations of Bosnia and Herzegovina in cooperation with the competent State and Entity institutions with the World Bank’s technical assistance developed the Roadmap for the Just Transition of Coal Regions, making Bosnia and Herzegovina as the first country in the region to develop this document. The Roadmap is expected to be adopted by the Council of Ministers of Bosnia and Herzegovina by June 2023.

Following presentation of the Roadmap, the participants will discuss the holistic approach in finding alternatives to coal mining sector activities and the social aspect behind the just transition path. BiH’s energy system and infrastructure will need significant modernization to respond to the country’s needs and risks. Despite abundant water resources, the country is facing water challenges that will likely worsen with climate change. The projected impacts of climate change make BiH increasingly vulnerable, and it will have a negative impact on unemployment and in the most vulnerable sectors of the population, including women.
